In support of Human Trafficking Awareness month, Maryvale today kicked off "A Celebration of Courage” week to educate and empower foster youth and raise awareness and support in the community for the Los Angeles victims of child sexual exploitation.

A Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) 101 awareness and education class for community members and local community partners will be held on Maryvale’s Rosemead campus from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 19th.

A Celebration of Courage silent auction and art exhibit will feature canvases with messages of support and hope for every child victim and survivor of sex trafficking.

Foster youth from Maryvale’s Residential Treatment Program for traumatized children created the works of art to help raise awareness of the horrific growth of the global, domestic and especially local sex trafficking of children.

The silent auction proceeds will be used to educate, prevent and treat children at risk for sex trafficking in Los Angeles.

A Celebration of Courage tree planting ceremony honoring the child victims and survivors of sex trafficking will take place Friday, Jan. 22nd at 4 p.m. in Rosemead.

About Maryvale: Maryvale, founded in 1856 by the Daughters of Charity, was the first orphanage in Los Angeles. Evolving over the decades into a nonprofit that responds to the critical and changing needs of the most traumatized youth in the Foster Care system, Maryvale’s programs now include a Residential Treatment Program for severely abused girls, aged 12 to 18; an Emergency Placement Center that provides mental health and assessment services in a safe and caring environment for 6 to 12 year old boys and girls who are in imminent danger; a Family Resource Center to strengthen families, and two Early Education Centers.
