Maryvale Board of Directors


Sister Patricia Miguel, Chairperson
Daughter of Charity, MSW, Provincial Treasurer

Sister Patricia Miguel joined the Daughters of Charity in 1982 and currently serves as the Treasurer for the Province and Chairperson of the Board of Directors. Sister Patricia’s affiliation with the Daughters of Charity began a year after she completed her undergraduate studies at College of Notre Dame, now known as the University of Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, California. She received a Master of Social Work (MSW) from Boston College.

As a clinical social worker, Sister Patricia worked in elementary schools and residential treatment facilities including Maryvale. She was a counselor at St. Francis Medical Center's Children Counseling Center and a mission leader for St. Vincent Medical Center. She has served on the board for the South Central Los Angeles Ministry Project (LAMP), a community program that empowers disadvantaged women and their families. She has also served on the Board of Directors for several hospitals.

While at Maryvale from 1992 to 2006, Sister Patricia held the positions of supervisor for the night and on-call staff, liaison with the outreach program and Director of the Foster Family Program. Sister Patricia joined the Board in December 2018.

 

Jacquie Dolan, Vice-Chairperson
Vice-Chairperson, Community Volunteer and Children's Advocate

Mrs. Dolan has been a long-time supporter of Maryvale and advocate for children. She began her relationship with Maryvale in 1968 when she joined the Orphanage Guild Juniors holding leadership positions from 1969 to 1979. In 1980, Mrs. Dolan joined Maryvale's Advisory Board and served as Chair of the Advisory Board beginning in 1999 until 2011 when she was appointed to the Board of Directors.

In addition to her work with Maryvale, Mrs. Dolan has served as Chairperson of the Children's Research Institute of California's Foster Care Policy Board of Los Angeles, a Member of the California Children's Lobby Foster Care Policy Board, Founding President for Friends of Child Advocates a non-profit corporation which supports the Los Angeles County Superior Court Child Advocates Office, helped chair the preliminary meetings to establish the California Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Association and served as President of the CASA Board of Directors from 1990-1993. She has been a member of the CASA Los Angeles Board of Directors since 2007 and Chair of its Development Committee since 2008.

Mrs. Dolan has also served on numerous Advisory Committees including the Community Advisory Committee to the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services in 1990 and was appointed by Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of California, Malcolm M. Lucas, to the Judicial Council Judicial Performance Procedures Standing Advisory Committee.

 

Dr. Marsha Chan, Secretary
Pharm D, MBA, FACHE, President, MCC Health Care Consulting

Dr. Chan is a Doctor of Pharmacy and holds a Master’s of Business Administration. She is currently the President of MCC Health Care Consulting, providing a diverse portfolio of healthcare consulting focused on healthcare quality, patient safety and performance improvement. She is a Master Examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

Dr. Chan served as the Chief Administrative Officer for Cynosure Health, a not-for-profit health care consulting team from 2012-2021. Prior to joining Cynosure Health, she spent nearly 24 years with the Daughters of Charity Health System’s St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood California serving as Senior Vice President/Chief Quality Officer & Corporate Responsibility Officer.

She joined the Maryvale Board of Directors in 2008 and serves as the Board Secretary as well as currently Chairing Strategic Planning Committee.

 

Mr. Michael P. Amerio, Treasurer
Partner, Lucas, Horsfall, Murphy & Pindroh,  LLP

Mike Amerio is Lucas, Horsfall, Murphy and Pindroh’s Managing Partner. He has more than 20 years of public accounting experience. He provides audit, income tax and business advisory services to privately held companies and individuals in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, construction, insurance brokerage and not¬-for-profit organizations.

These services have been rendered to clients ranging in size from start-ups to middle market businesses. Additionally, Mike has substantial experience with employee benefit plan audits. Mike was elected Treasurer for the City of Sierra Madre in 2017, and reelected in 2020.

Mike is a graduate of San Diego State University, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. His professional affiliations include memberships in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and California Society of Certified Public Accountants. Mike is an active member in various business and civic community activities including volunteering with various youth sports leagues.

Mike is the chairperson of Maryvale’s Finance Committee and a member of the Audit Committee.

He lives in Sierra Madre with his wife, Cynthia, and their three sons.

 

Sister Betty Marie Dunkel
Daughter of Charity, Executive Director, Epiphany Center

Sister Betty Marie is a member of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul and is currently the Executive Director at the Epiphany Center in San Francisco. She has both a Masters in Social Work and a Master’s in Public Administration and recently served on the Provincial Council for the Daughters of Charity Province of the West as Councilor of Social Ministries.

Prior to her appointment to the Provincial Council, Sister Betty Marie served as Maryvale’s Executive Director from December 2005 until February 2009. Sister Betty Marie served in residential treatment centers for 24 years, starting out in childcare at Maryvale; and has held positions as Assistant Executive Director at Mt. St. Joseph-St. Elizabeth’s in San Francisco and Executive Director at St. Vincent’s in Santa Barbara. She served as the Executive Director of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Gallup, New Mexico for nine years.

Sister Betty Marie has served on numerous Boards during her 50 years as a Daughter of Charity: St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Los Angeles, O’Connor Medical Center in San Jose, Mt. St. Joseph-St. Elizabeth in San Francisco, Seton Medical Center in Daly City and St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood. In addition to Maryvale, she currently serves on the Boards at St. Vincent’s in Santa Barbara, Villa Caridad in Santa Barbara, Mt. St. Joseph-St. Elizabeth’s in San Francisco, and on the Corporate Boards of the Daughters of Charity Health System and the Daughters of Charity Ministry Services Corporation. She is also on the Boards of Vincentian Services Corps in Daly City, Life Sharing, Inc. in Tuba City, Arizona, Rosalie Rendu Center in East Palo Alto, and Give Me a Chance, Inc. in Ogden, Utah.

Sister has been a member of Maryvale’s Board of Directors at various times throughout the past 30 years, and currently since 2009.

 

Sister Estela Morales
Daughter of Charity, MSW, Social Ministries Councilor, Provincial Assistant

Sister Estela Morales is a member of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul and serves on the Provincial Council for the Daughters of Charity Province of the West as Councilor of Social Ministries. Sister Estela began working for The Epiphany Center in San Francisco in 1989 and served as Executive Director since 2008.
In addition to her Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Wayne State University, she has 30 years of supervisory experience in social service agencies. Prior to her time as Executive Director, she directed day care for young children as well as residential programs for young children and adolescents.

She has over 20 years of experience working with special needs infants and their parents and served on a primary health care project in Lima, Peru. She also worked with migrant workers in central California and is bilingual Spanish.

Sister Estela has a long history with Maryvale having served as a Teacher and Director of the Day Care Center program from 1971-1978 and Director of the Residential Program from 1983-1984. Sr. Estela joined the Board in November 2007.

 

Kathleen McCollum

Mrs. McCollum completed her studies at both UCLA and The University of Kentucky. She spent numerous years in thoroughbred horse breeding, the racing industry and most recently commercial real estate. Since retiring Mrs. McCollum has enjoyed volunteering for various nonprofit organizations within the San Gabriel Valley such as The Pasadena Children’s Guild which is dedicated to improving the lives of children with special needs, The Pasadena Literacy Alliance, Reading Partners and assisting with Thanksgiving Homeless Collections.

She lives in Altadena and has three daughters.

 

Shimica Gaskins

President and CEO, GRACE & End Child Poverty California

Shimica has worked in law and public policy specializing in legislative, regulatory and policy issues associated with criminal justice reform and children’s rights. Prior to joining GRACE, she was executive director of Children’s Defense Fund-California, where she led statewide advocacy, policy, program and organizing efforts to ensure access to quality affordable health coverage and care for children and low-income families, reform the juvenile justice system, promote educational equity, end child poverty, and improve outcomes for children of color. She formerly served as the Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Legal Policy (OLP) of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) where she worked to develop and implement innovative policy initiatives of the department and administration in areas such as smart on crime, law enforcement and emerging technologies, prison reform, reentry, and issues affecting children with incarcerated parents. Prior to joining DOJ, she was in private practice at Covington & Burling LLP where she managed complex civil litigation. Shimica began her career as a law clerk for the Honorable Roger L. Gregory on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the Honorable Victoria Roberts on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

Shimica is a Commissioner on the LA County Commission for Children and Families, appointed to the State of California’s Hope, Opportunity, Perseverance, and Empowerment for Child Trust Account Program Board, and serves on the boards of Impact Justice, California Budget & Policy Center, Liberty Hill Foundation, Young Women’s Freedom Center and several advisory boards. Shimica is a 2022 Leading Edge Fellow through the Rosenberg Foundation focused on closing the racial wealth gap and creating economic mobility for California’s most vulnerable children by piloting the largest baby bond program in the country. Her writings have appeared in USA Today, Sacramento Bee, Los Angeles Daily News, CalMatters, and legal journals.

Shimica earned her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center and graduated cum laude with BA in philosophy from the Catholic University of America.
