June 1st marks an important day for children worldwide as we celebrate International Children’s Day. It is a time to honor the rights, well-being, and happiness of children worldwide, reframing global welfare conversations to focus on children. Maryvale is proud to celebrate this critical moment and to emphasize that every child deserves a nurturing and secure environment to thrive – regardless of where they live, how much money their family has, and what they look like. Let’s take a moment to reflect on the significance of child welfare and safety and explore ways to create a better future for our young ones.

Ensuring Children’s Basic Needs are Met

Child welfare and safety begins with taking care to ensure that every child has access to their basic needs and comforts. These include nutritious food, clean water, proper healthcare, and adequate shelter. According to last year’s count, Los Angeles County had over 51,000 homeless young people, plus an additional 7,000 children in foster care. Children who grow up without the essential needs covered are at high risk of long-term mental health disorders, physical illness, and poverty. In particular, domestic instability and a lack of adequate care when a child is very young – between 0 and 5 years old – can cause irreversible damage to their brains, bodies, and ability to function. Children deserve better. By providing support and resources to families in need, we can ensure that children grow up in environments that meet their fundamental requirements, laying a solid foundation for their overall well-being.

Quality Education for All

Education is a fundamental right of every child and plays a crucial role in their welfare. International Children’s Day reminds us to focus on ensuring access to quality education for all children, regardless of their socioeconomic background. A reliable education not only equips children with knowledge and skills but also promotes their social and emotional development. At Maryvale, our early childhood education programs support a creative, holistic learning journey, empowering children to think imaginatively about the world from a very young age and enabling them to reach their full potential. We are committed to providing affordable, accessible preschool to children whose families might not otherwise be able to afford their education.

Protection from Violence and Exploitation

Child safety is an integral part of child welfare. Adults are responsible for protecting children from violence, abuse, neglect, and exploitation. We support efforts to strengthen child protection systems, raise awareness, and enforce policies against child labor, trafficking, and all forms of violence. Child abuse is a grave concern that requires our utmost attention. International Children’s Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness about child abuse prevention and support systems. We believe in uniting efforts with families and communities to recognize the signs of abuse and provide a safe space for children to seek help. It is crucial to educate children about good touch and bad touch, encourage open dialogue about their experiences, and empower them to speak up against any form of abuse. By fostering a culture of zero tolerance for child abuse, we can create a safer world where children can grow and flourish without fear.

Mental and Emotional Well-being

Child welfare and safety encompasses not only physical health but also mental and emotional well-being. Children should be supported and provided with the necessary resources to develop resilience, self-esteem, and emotional intelligence. Promoting positive mental health practices, providing access to counseling services, and creating safe spaces for expression and play are essential for nurturing children’s well-being. By prioritizing mental and emotional health, we empower children to face life’s challenges with strength and confidence.

Family and Community Support

Strong families and supportive communities are essential for the welfare of children. International Children’s Day serves as a reminder to foster environments where families are given the tools and support to care for their children effectively. Communities should provide safe recreational spaces, organize educational programs, and establish networks for parents to connect and share experiences. Homes, schools, parks, and communities should be designed and maintained with children’s safety in mind. This includes ensuring secure boundaries, childproofing homes, and providing well-maintained play areas. Paying attention to potential hazards and taking preventive measures can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and injuries. Building robust support systems creates a sense of belonging and solidarity, benefiting both children and their caregivers.

Empowering Children’s Participation

Child welfare entails recognizing young people as active participants in decision-making processes that affect their lives. It is essential for families, teachers, and community leaders to listen to children’s voices, respect their opinions, and involve them in matters that concern them. Giving children the confidence to assert themselves, creating ways for them to express their ideas, and encouraging their involvement in community initiatives help instill a sense of empowerment and foster their development as responsible and engaged citizens.

At Maryvale, we have advocated for the welfare, safety, and healthy development of Los Angeles’ most vulnerable children for over 165 years. Through our early childhood education program, our family housing program, and our mental health services, we deliver on this promise, and we invite our community to join us in uplifting children’s voices and celebrating their contributions. Happy International Children’s Day!
