Creating a Year of Inclusion
Every child deserves to feel seen, supported, and valued exactly as they are. At Maryvale Early Education Centers, inclusion is more than a guiding principle; it is a daily practice rooted in compassion, safety, and community care. We believe that all children, regardless of ability, background, or circumstance, deserve access to nurturing environments that support healthy early childhood development in Los Angeles County.
Children arrive at school with unique strengths, needs, and experiences. When classrooms are designed to honor these differences, children not only thrive academically but also socially and emotionally. As we move into a new year, Maryvale remains committed to continuing to expand inclusive practices across our early education and inclusive preschool programs, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and belong.
Why Inclusion Matters in Early Childhood Education
The early years of life are foundational. Research consistently shows that children develop critical social, emotional, and cognitive skills from birth through age five.. Inclusive learning environments play a crucial role in supporting the development of all children.
According to research, children who participate in inclusive classrooms are more likely to:
- Build empathy and understanding toward others
- Develop stronger communication and social skills
- Experience improved academic outcomes over time
Inclusion goes beyond physical access or accommodations. It means creating emotionally safe spaces where children feel accepted, confident, and supported as they explore, ask questions, and try new things. When children feel they belong, they are more engaged, curious, and motivated to learn.
Maryvale’s Approach to Inclusive Early Childhood Education
Maryvale’s Early Education Centers serve infants, toddlers, and preschool aged children, providing high quality care rooted in trauma-informed, developmentally appropriate practices. Our programs recognize that many children and families are navigating complex challenges such as housing insecurity, economic hardship, or mental health stressors. With that understanding, we design our preschool curriculum to meet children where they are, both academically and emotionally.
Individualized Learning and Support
No two children learn the same way. Maryvale educators carefully observe and assess each child’s strengths, interests, and developmental needs. Teachers use this insight to tailor learning strategies and classroom supports that encourage growth while honoring each child’s pace.
Social Integration and Peer Learning
Inclusive classrooms allow children of all abilities to learn, play, and problem solve together. Through shared activities, children develop communication skills, collaboration, empathy, and mutual respect. These early experiences build a strong foundation for lifelong social development.
Supportive and Predictable Environments
Consistency matters in trauma-informed early childhood. Maryvale classrooms emphasize predictable routines, positive reinforcement, and emotional safety. These elements help children feel secure, regulate emotions, and build confidence as learners.
Family and Caregiver Partnership
Caregivers are essential partners in a child’s education. Maryvale works closely with families through regular communication, workshops, and consultations. By supporting families with tools and knowledge, we help reinforce learning at home and strengthen children’s overall development.
A Story of Hope and Belonging
Maryvale’s impact is best reflected in the lived experiences of the families we serve.
One woman caregiver, Tammy, and her three-year-old daughter, Sue, came to Maryvale after experiencing housing instability. When Sue enrolled in Maryvale’s subsidized inclusive preschool program, her natural curiosity quickly blossomed. In a joyful and supportive learning environment, she thrived both academically and socially.
Maryvale’s Early Education Center provided Sue with a consistent and safe space to learn. TThat stability allowed Tammy to secure full time employment nearby. Over time, she no longer needed cash assistance and began saving for permanent housing, taking meaningful steps toward long term independence.
This story reflects Maryvale’s holistic mission: supporting not just children, but entire families, and creating pathways toward stability, resilience, and hope.

The Benefits of Inclusion for All Children
Inclusive classrooms strengthen entire communities. Children in these environments learn to:
- Practice patience and kindness
- Work collaboratively with others
- Solve problems creatively
- Respect and celebrate differences
These experiences help children build resilience and confidence, qualities that extend far beyond the classroom. Inclusive early education lays the groundwork for healthier relationships, stronger communities, and more equitable opportunities later in life.
