Real Voices from Maryvale
At Maryvale, we are constantly inspired by the strength and resilience of the women in our community. Their stories of transformation and hope remind us every day of the incredible power of love and support. Here are some real voices from the heart of Seton House:
Nyala
Nyala shares a powerful reflection on her journey:
"I had no hope and thought I would be in the same position forever. Since I moved to Seton House, I have gained independence, strength, and courage only because I feel like every day is a day to make myself better and with that, it gives me the confidence, like, I can do this, I got this, and I’m really excited for the next chapter."
Nyala’s words embody the transformative power of the support provided at Seton House. Every day is an opportunity to build a better future.
Dorothy
Dorothy, another Seton House resident, reflects on the importance of seeking help:
“I would highly recommend moms who are seeking help to do so. They won’t regret it—neither will their children."
Angelina
Angelina also shares her experience:
"I want to be able to obtain work. Now I’m able to work more since my son’s in this program."
"I want to be able to obtain my own place for me and my son. I want to learn how to become independent—just to be able to take care of me and my family."
Many women at Seton House share her determination to create a better future for themselves and their children as they work towards independence and stability for their families.
Angelina goes on to express how the program has positively impacted her son’s sense of security:
"He told me, ‘Mom, I love it here.’ That made me feel like, okay, he’s comfortable. That’s what matters. He feels safe."
So many moms long for this moment of reassurance—the peace of mind that their children are safe and thriving.
Angelina also shares the importance of the support system around her:
"Being here with other moms, I realized my family is not the only one going through these situations. We all need help sometimes. Seton House is really there for you in so many ways."
For her, the workshops offered at Seton House have been a new and exciting opportunity: "I’m excited about the workshops because I’ve never been into anything like that. It’s new to me, but I feel like it’s an opportunity to learn new things."
Finally, Angelina shares how structure has brought stability to her life: "So far, I feel like I’ve gotten on a schedule. Before, I was kind of all over the place. Now, my son and I are both on a schedule. We have a certain bedtime, a certain time we’re waking up, and a certain time for dinner. It’s kind of something we weren’t used to. We were kind of just all over the place. That’s going to help a lot—prepares me for responsibilities and priorities."
The routine and structure provided at Seton House are key elements that help the women regain control over their lives, instilling discipline and a sense of responsibility.
Angelina says, "Being here, I have the opportunity to learn many things."
The Many Forms of Motherhood
At Maryvale, we honor every path that leads a woman to become a caregiver, nurturer, protector, and guide.
Many of the women at Seton House are writing their own stories of resilience, often while healing from trauma or rebuilding their lives. They balance growth, learning, and caregiving all at once—and that’s motherhood in one of its most powerful forms.
Legacy of Care
In Los Angeles County, many women face significant challenges related to housing and economic stability. According to a report from the Gender Equity Policy Institute, 49% of women in California spend 30% or more of their income on rent—a higher share than men.
More than 80% of women have faced long periods of homelessness throughout their lives, with over half of them experiencing homelessness for more than five years.
