Summer is right around the corner. With school out and kids taking a few months to enjoy a break from the classroom, it is crucial for families to find alternate routines to build a supportive experience that sets them up for continued academic success. Make no mistake – it is vital and healthy for kids of all ages to put classroom activities on pause for a while. Too often, kids instead spend all summer staring at the television or a computer screen. Young people deserve dedicated time and space to hone their interpersonal skills, soak up some vitamin D, and enjoy physical forms of play.

From a mental health perspective, summer can represent a disruption of a child’s routine and sense of safety and progress. Young people who perpetrate or are victims of aggression, bullying, and other risky social behaviors are more likely to act out in the summer months than during the school year. Generally, children’s mental health and sense of safety are seasonally impacted in the summer, with issues escalating in August and September when kids go back to school. This means that a break in children’s learning can lead to damaging habits and behaviors if they are missing structure, healthy socializing, positive modeling by adult caregivers, and a reliable daily structure. With these essential ingredients in mind, there’s no better time to enroll your child in Maryvale’s Summer Day Camp.

Our Summer Day Camp is fun, educational, active, and supportive. Kids can swim at our Rosemead Center under the close supervision of many adults and always with a lifeguard present. Weekly water play is one way we encourage kids to stay active and cool down on warm summer days.

Through our program, we blend a learning mindset with approachable, fun activities. We work to help children maintain their sense of curiosity and try on learning formats that complement what they do in the classroom the rest of the year. In addition to entertaining activities at our facilities, we bring children out into the world to learn more about the local community and explore our surroundings’ natural beauty. Our field trips take young people to the KidSpace Museum in Pasadena, Griffith Park Observatory, Pirate Park, and hiking trips in the Children’s Forest. Maryvale’s Summer Day Camp functions as an extension of our before-and-after-school programs. Our staff makes each day a fun, exploratory experience while promoting positive social development, physical and mental health, and a spirit of inquiry that keeps children mentally acute. Get in touch to learn more about our summer programs.
