Creating a Future Without Fear

Imagine a community where every woman and child has the support they need to heal from trauma, break cycles of hardship, and pursue a brighter future. At Maryvale, we make that vision a reality—right here in the heart of Los Angeles County.

Founded in 1856, Maryvale is the oldest children’s services organization in L.A., committed to empowering women, girls, and families through holistic programs rooted in compassion and dignity.

A Legacy of Empowerment Since 1856

Maryvale’s story began in 1856 with the Daughters of Charity and their legacy of service, who arrived in Los Angeles to care for orphaned and vulnerable girls long before a formal child welfare system existed.

In 1953, philanthropist Carrie Estelle Doheny helped establish Maryvale’s Rosemead campus. Since then, we’ve expanded our mission to serve mothers and children throughout Rosemead, Duarte, and South El Monte.

Trauma-Informed Support for Women and Girls

At Maryvale, we know that healing is not a straight line. We offer a trauma-informed, culturally responsive approach to help women and girls overcome the past and move forward with strength. Our services include:

  • Therapy and counseling
  • Support groups and life skills training
  • Parenting classes
  • Referrals for mental health and substance use treatment through Connections by Maryvale

Housing That Changes Lives

A safe place to live can transform a family’s future. Maryvale’s housing programs provide stability and dignity for women and girls at risk:

  • Seton House: Temporary housing for single mothers and their children. Families receive wraparound services and tools to rebuild their lives.
  • Hope Housing for Students: In partnership with The Shower of Hope, this program offers safe, temporary housing for female community college students in L.A. who would otherwise face homelessness.

Building Strong Futures Through Education

Education is one of the most powerful tools to break the cycle of poverty and trauma. We support women and young children with:

  •
  • Early Childhood Education for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers at our Rosemead, Duarte, and South El Monte campuses
  • Compassionate teachers who focus on social-emotional growth, academic readiness, and stability
