Steve Gunther, MSW
President & Chief Executive Officer
Steve Gunther joined Maryvale in 2009, having served in several leadership positions at various non-profit organizations. Steve was the Chief Operating Officer at St. Anne’s, a social service agency serving at-risk pregnant women, mothers, and children for five years. Prior to that position, Steve was the Program Operations Manager at Girls and Boys Town of Southern California. Dedicated to giving vulnerable young people the best possible chance for a bright future, Steve has worked directly with children and youth—as a high school teacher, social worker, and administrator—since 1984.
Steve holds a Masters of Arts in Management from the Claremont Graduate University, Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management; a Masters of Social Work (MSW) from the University of Southern California; and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Theology from Loyola Marymount University. Steve is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of California.
Steve is a member of the Board of Directors for the California Alliance of Child and Family Services, The Association of Community Human Services Agencies and St. Vincent’s Hospital in Santa Barbara. He is married and has five beautiful children.
Juliann Curabba, LCSW, MSEd
Chief Operations Officer
Juliann Curabba joined Maryvale in 2016 as the Executive Vice President of Programs, bringing extensive administrative expertise in nonprofits to her new post.
Juliann began her career, some 25 years ago, as a social worker in the New York City foster care system where her passion for helping people and her success at developing efficient and effective programs led to Senior level roles in New York and California providing innovative residential and mental health services. Juliann has successfully managed over 30 million dollars of mental health contracts, fiscal, operations, and systems.
Juliann worked with CEOs in New York City along with Ann E. Casey to develop “Best Practices in Residential Care.” She has been involved in multiple state, county and city leadership workgroups advocating on behalf of the children we serve.
Juliann is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in California and New York. She holds a certificate in Nonprofit Executive Leadership from New York University. She received her Master of Social Work from Hunter College in New York, a Master of Science in Education from Hunter College, and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from San Diego State University.
Renee Chan, SPHR
Chief Administrative Officer
Renee Chan joined Maryvale in 2008. In this role, Renee oversees the functions of Human Resources, Training, Facilities/Housekeeping and Safety at Maryvale. Previous to her tenure at Maryvale Renee worked as Sr. Director of Human Resources at Syntax- Brillian for two years and has held positions as Vice President of Human Resources, Staffing and Training Director and HumanResources Director in the technology, manufacturing and retail services industries.
Renee holds a Bachelors of Science in Business from the University of Redlands. In addition, she holds a Certificate as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) issued by the Society for Human Resource Management. She is an active member of the Human Resource group through The Association of Community Human Services Agencies. Renee is married and has two wonderful sons.
Sister Alicia Martin, DC
Advisor to the President on Spiritual Formation of Associates
Sister Alicia was appointed to the current position August 1, having served as Mission Effectiveness Leader at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood. She also spent three years in an intense Vincentian Integration program in Chicago. Sister has a wealth of experience serving children and families. For 15 years, she worked and developed life skills programs for the developmentally disabled children and young adults. She also taught Junior High and High School and served as principal of two elementary schools, one in San Francisco and a multi-graded school in Montebello. Sister served as Executive Director of St. Vincent’s in Santa Barbara. She started a transitional housing program for single moms on welfare and re-opened the Children’s Center. She collaborated with Mercy Housing, California to build 95 HUD 202 apartments for seniors and 75 units for families on the St. Vincent’s campus. Sr. Alicia holds a Master's degree in Special Education from George Peabody College in Nashville, TN; a Master's degree in Private School Administration from USF, San Francisco; and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in education from Marillac College, St. Louis, MO. She has a life-time California Teaching Credential for K-12 grade and Special Education. Sr. Alicia has served on several non-profit boards in hospitals and social agencies as well as Catholic Charities in Long Beach, CA and the Logsdon School in Rosemead. Presently, Sr. Alicia is a member of the Board of Directors for St. Jude’s Food Bank in Tuba City, AZ and Marian Outreach Center in Long Beach.
Carole D. Tremblay, CFRE
Chief Development Officer
A native of Canada, Carole, began her development career in Ottawa, Ontario where in 1987, after a successful career in advertising and public relations she joined a fund development consulting firm where she served on capital campaigns with goals ranging from $10 million to $25 million.
Since her arrival to Los Angeles in 1990, Carole has had a successful career as a development consultant and on staff for various nonprofit organizations. She has experience in capital campaigns, annual fund development, strategic planning and board development.
Carole was a guest lecturer in the UCLA Fundraising Certificate program and at CSUN for several years. Carole received her CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) in 1994.
Carole is married and has two daughters.
