RESIDENTIAL COUNSELOR – RELIEF

The relief residential counselor provides for the daily childcare and supervision of the residents and for the implementation of the child’s and group’s behavioral plan. The expectation of the relief resident counselor is to be available on short notice to fill vacant job hours due to regular staff absences.  Relief  resident counselors must maintain forty (40) hours of residential based service training every twelve months. 

        

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Demonstrate a passion and commitment for the Mission and Vincentian Core Values of Maryvale and the Daughters of Charity.
  • Create an atmosphere of enthusiasm and energetic commitment and serve as a role model in carrying out the Mission.
  • Promote and support the attitudes, behaviors, knowledge and skills necessary to work respectfully and effectively with each other as well as demonstrate the ability to address the needs of the children and families Maryvale serves.
  • Follow the Trauma Informed Care philosophy when supporting and addressing the needs of the children and families Maryvale serves.
  • Utilize Trauma Informed Care approach in recognizing the presence of trauma symptoms and acknowledge the role that trauma has played in the lives of the clients/residents.
  • Assist in the healing process by developing appropriate RICH® (Respect, Information, Connection and Hope)relationships with those served.  
  • Follow Universal Precautions when exposed to blood and body fluids.
  • Follow Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) regulations pertaining to safety and the use of equipment/machinery. 
  • Support Maryvale’s Performance and Quality Improvement Plan and participate in discussion regarding department or program goals, data collection and/or analysis.
  • Incorporates Agency philosophy and mission in all aspects of the job description.
  • Provide nurturing care to residents on a daily basis.
  • Implement assigned activities in group.
  • Follow through on individualized care plans as directed.
  • Supervise and participate in group activities as directed.
  • Encourage and supervises children’s participation in the general upkeep of the group living areas.
  • Supervise mealtime for the assigned group of children.  Mealtime is considered “on duty” work time. 
  • Used appropriate de-escalation procedures when residents are upset and the hierarchy of containment procedures as needed to insure resident safety.
  • Document special incidents per Maryvale policy and procedure.
  • Transports children to outside appointments as directed.
  • Communicated pertinent information to supervisors.
  •  Participates, implements and completes in-service training programs as directed.
  • Attends and actively participate in all group meetings.
  • Dispense medications when required per Maryvale policy and procedure.
  • Provide supervision, protection and care of the children individually and in groups at all times.
  • Provide assistance to each child in working with a group and in handling individual problems.
  • Administration of discipline and setting of limits for behavior.
  • Notation of the child’s progress; identification of the possible need for professional services; and communication of such findings to professional staff.
  • Provide assistance in dressing, grooming, bathing and other personal hygiene.
  • Assistance with taking medication, as necessary.
  • Ensures that medication shall be kept in a safe and locked place that is not accessible to persons other than Associates responsible for the supervision of the centrally stored medication.
  • Ensures assistance is provided to the children in meeting their medical and dental needs.
  • Maintenance of house rules for the protection of clients.
  • Supervision of client schedules and activities.
  •  Maintenance and/or supervision of client cash resources or property.
  • Monitoring food intake or special diets.
  • Performs other duties as assigned 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science Degree preferred or;
    • Have a valid Child Development Teaching Permit;
    • Have Completed 12 semester units of Early Childhood Education, Adolescent Development, or Foster and Kinship Care Educations and have at least 100 hours of experience working with youth;
    • Have a valid certificate as an Alcohol Counselor, Drug Counselor or Alcohol and Drug Counselor, and have at least 100 hours of experience working with youth;
    • Have a valid Vocational Training certificate, credential or documentation demonstrating that the individual is a trade journey person who instructs children in vocational skills and have at least 100 hours of experience working with yours; or
    • Have previously been employed as a staff or volunteer at that group home or short-term residential therapeutic center for at least one year.
  • Respond to life threatening situations.
  • Prevent and/or intervene using PROACT in crisis situations.
  • First Aid trained, PROACT trained.
  • Multi-task and work effectively under high-pressure situations.
  • Manage and assist in chaotic and potentially dangerous situations
  • Problem-solve and make sound judgments relative to staff and clients under his/her care.
  • Have a thorough understanding of the special needs of at-risk children.
  • Have a thorough understanding of the agency’s policies and procedures, inter-relationships, and departments.    
  • Able to drive agency vehicles.
  • Valid California Driver’s license

PHYSICAL & SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an Associate to successfully perform the essential functions of this job: While performing the duties of this job, the Associate is frequently required to walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, and talk or hear. The Associate is often required to stand and sit; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The Associate must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds individually. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Have the physical capacity to work with and restrain children as needed.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Associate may occasionally be required to drive a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to implement program goals and deal with participants behavioral issues.
  • A valid driver license that allows a person to be insured as designated by our vehicle insurance carrier.
  • Ability to follow through with and update, in a timely fashion, all other necessary trainings as outlined by agency, state, and federal guidelines.

Medical, Dental & Vision Insurance - Maryvale offers a choice of two medical plans and two dental plans for full-time Associates. In addition, we offer vision insurance through VSP. The majority of an Associate's premiums are covered by the agency and Associates are offered the opportunity to add dependents to their insurance plans for an additional cost.

Holiday Pay - Maryvale recognizes 10 full-day paid holidays,  and 1 Holiday of Choice each calendar year (Regular part-time employees receive pro-rated time).

Vacation - Maryvale recognizes the value of rest and relaxation and encourages Associates to take time off with their families. Regular full-time Associates accrue paid vacation leave according to the following schedule:

  • 1 to 3 years of service - 10 working days per year
  • 4 to 7 years of service - 15 working days per year
  • 8 years or more of service - 20 working days per year

Sick Time - Associates accrue sick time at 1 hour for each 28.9 hours of work.

Life Insurance - Maryvale pays for a basic Life & Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance Policy that pays beneficiaries a flat $15,000 death benefit.

401(k) Pension Plan - Associates are eligible to enroll in the 401(k) Retirement Plan on the first day of the month after their hire date.

  • Match of Employee Contributions: After completing one year of service, Maryvale will match 100% of an Associate’s salary deferral up to a maximum of the first 3% (1%-3%). In addition, Maryvale will match 66% of an Associate’s salary deferral up to a maximum of the next 3% (3%-6%).
  • Non-Elective Contribution: After an Associate completes one full year of service, Maryvale on the Associate’s behalf, will begin making a fixed non-elective contribution equal to 3% of the Associate’s income. This contribution is separate from the matching contribution and vests over a 5 year period.

Long Term Disability Insurance - Maryvale offers Long Term Disability Insurance to all benefits-eligible Associates at no cost to the Associate. Maryvale pays the full premium for these benefits which provide salary protection in the event an Associate becomes disabled for an extended period of time.
